Challenges

Delivering on the promise of a next-gen smart city requires extensive coordination of intelligent technologies. This was particularly true for one of the Middle East’s most-prominent smart cities. With operations spanning 16 business sectors, the smart-city operator wanted to establish an intelligent digital ecosystem with standardized processes, integrated applications, and a centralized data repository. If it succeeded in this transformation, the smart city would deepen its talent pool, promote collaboration across sectors, drive operational efficiencies, and achieve its vision of an innovative business and tourist destination.

Solution

The smart-city managers needed a single, unified view of their operations that also supported business growth. Using a design-led transformation framework, Wipro leveraged SAP S/4HANA, SAP Ariba, and the SAP SuccessFactors application suite to break data silos and integrate disparate systems. 

Wipro then created an RPA-enabled standardized process across SAP S/4HANA Finance, SAP Ariba Procurement, and sourcing functions to automate data replication between applications, reducing manual interventions and enhancing the buyer/supplier experience across all sectors. Implementing BW/4HANA and analytics solutions with master data management further enabled real-time reporting and better visibility of data across business functions.

Yet success hinged upon more than innovative technology. It also required stakeholders to be aligned with, and ready to support, the operators’ vision. Wipro leveraged a three-pronged Organizational Change Management approach of advisory, partnership, and ownership to develop an active “Change and Communications” strategy. This foundation was critical in facilitating the cultural transformation necessary to succeed. 

Business Impact

This robust IT system standardized processes across line of businesses and provided real-time reporting for various functions. It also simplified source-to-pay processes by 80%. Coupled with a reduction in manual interventions in finance, procurement, and sourcing, the integrated system improved the employee experience and helped boost employee retention. And, by addressing various aspects of change management, the program achieved a 100% adoption rate in just three months, setting the standard for future enhancements to the smart city’s ongoing transformation journey.
