National Grid : Maximizing efficiency of assets and enabling critical decision making

The client
National Grid is the developer, owner and operator of Great Britain’s natural gas transportation system that serves more than 20 million domestic, commercial and industrial users. National Grid stores and distributes natural gas on behalf of 90 energy shippers throughout Great Britain and delivers around half of Great Britain’s energy needs through its 275,000 km of pipe network.

The challenge
With over 275,000 km of gas pipeline, 24 compressor stations and 140 off-take points that are used to supply 40 power stations, a number of large industrial consumers and eight gas distribution networks, National Grid’s challenge lay in maximizing the performance of its regulated assets while maintaining the highest standards of service and safety. To do this National Grid required timely and quality information on its assets and operations.

The solution
The Wipro team took over the complete support of all critical applications of National Grid with clearly defined Service Level Agreements. For the past three years Wipro has been providing application support services that cover fix on fail support, essential maintenance and enhancements to the MIS. In order to ensure that the Work and Asset Management program of National Grid helped them achieve their twin objectives of profitability and performance, Wipro also provided consultancy on functional issues and on business process changes.

The benefits
Wipro’s application support of the Work and Asset Management program of National Grid helped them improve their decision making process with the generation time of pre-defined business reports being reduced by 50 percent. Processes have been streamlined resulting in greater control over systems within National Grid and reduced work load on the gas distribution networks. This improved control over the assets has also resulted in lower maintenance and operational costs.
