Water and wastewater utility serving millions of customers
Business objectives
As part of UK government efforts to boost the housing market, the water regulator (OFWAT) introduced a new regulation that incentivizes the Water Utilities to improve the services they provide to the building developer Community. The objective is to attune to the needs of the real estate industry, to support the growth of the population and the overall needs of the economy. Popularly known as D-MEX (Developer Services Measure of Experience), this regulatory reform incentivizes water companies to achieve improved customer satisfaction. As one of the largest water companies in the country, the client experienced challenges in sharing the D-MeX data with OFWAT, as it was scattered across corporate systems and not always available in an extractable format. The key objectives of this program therefore included:
- Timely and accurate submission of D-MeX data to avoid violating operating licence conditions and incurring hefty penalties, amounting to millions, caused due to non-compliance.
- Improve reputation with OFWAT.
- Supplement bandwidth of existing operational teams through easy access to relevant information and analytics.
How Wipro delivered client success
Wipro helped the client build a fully automated data analytics platform hosted on Microsoft Azure cloud, and integrated with the existing IT landscape. This provided the client with centralized access to all the data required by OFWAT and the capability to generate an automated report for submission. The key solution features include:
- A new data model that includes data from different sources like SAP ECC, SAP CRM, Share Point, etc.
- Data sourced from heterogeneous source systems using Azure Data Factory (ADF) V2 using the pipelines defined.
- Azure Data Lake (ADSL) Gen1 as a staging and long-term datastore.
- Data received from different sources are combined, modelled, transformed, and stored in SQL DWH.
- Power BI reporting on Microsoft Azure cloud platform, integrated with existing Thames Water corporate landscape using off-the-shelf wireframes for an improved user experience.
- Enabled business users to generate necessary reports through the analytics platform by combining the data from different sources.
- Facilitated the addition of new ad-hoc data sources required for analysis.
- Heterogeneous historical data (> 1 billion records) cleansed and made available in the analytics platform.
The impact
- Avoidance of potential fines, up to GBP 2.8 million per annum
- Compliance with regulatory requirement & avoiding a breach of the licence condition
- Cost savings – more than 200K GBP per annum due to effort savings and external data assurance costs
- Enhanced reputation with the regulator (OFWAT)
